Kellogg, a producer of cereals and convenience foods, has announced that seven of its facilities in the US have earned the US Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Energy Star certification.

In 2011, EPA awarded the same facilities the first-ever Energy Star certification, which is granted to bakeries that demonstrate best-in-class energy performance.

Kellogg chief sustainability officer Diane Holdorf said the company is committed to producing more using fewer natural resources - and that includes finding new ways to reduce energy use at its facilities.

According to Kellogg, in order to reduce energy use, the facilities followed several measures such as engaging employees, updating equipment, and streamlining processes.

The new certification positions the company's plants in the top 25% of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency.
