Chervolet reportedly has an all-electric car up its sleeve to rival the Tesla Model III.

Called the Chevrolet Bolt, it will be capable of driving 200 miles on a single charge. That's four times as far as the company's Volt hybrid car (pictured). The Bolt will launch in 2017, according to the Wall Street Journal. Chervolet's owner General Motors will show off a concept version of the car today at the Detroit Auto Show.

The Bolt will be a hatchback that will look more like a hybrid than an electric car, according the Journal's sources.

The Volt – Chervolet's hybrid – has been on sale since late 2010, and was redesigned for this year. It has a backup gasoline motor in case you run out of charge midway through your journey.

The question remains: can Chervolet compete with Tesla? General Motors has so far failed to dent Tesla's dominance in the electric market. It recently launched a Cadillac ELR plug-in aimed at the luxury end of the market. It intended to take on the Tesla Model S, but proved a flop.

GM executives have previously mentioned a 200-mile electric vehicle, but haven't confirmed concrete details on the car.

The Bolt is expected to cost around the same $30,000 (£20,000) as the forthcoming Tesla Model III.

A GM spokesperson declined to comment on the report.
